It was the first capital of British East Africa until Nairobi became the capital in 1907. The city soon became a major trading center in East Africa, mainly trading spices, slaves, coconuts and ivory. Commercial ties reached the mainland of India and China. Over the centuries, the city changed hands – the Arabs, the Portuguese, the Sultanate of Oman, and in 1840 Mombasa was taken by the Sultan of Zanzibar, who later gave it to the British. It became a protectorate of Great Britain, which made Mombasa a sea gate and railway station. Tourists enjoy some types of safaris and since the beach is perfect for snorkeling, diving and much
