The Tour of the South is an itinerary leading from Antananarivo to Toliary, a several-day driving tour that brings you through various regions, admiring unique natural beauties.

Tour Plan

Day 1 Antananarivo

Arrive in Antananarivo. Meet & assist at the airport, then transfer to the Colbert Hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2 Antsirabe

Breakfast. Drive to Antsirabe (170km/ 4hrs) with a visit to Aluminum’s foundry in Ambatolampy. Afternoon city tour. Lunch, dinner, and overnight at Plumeria hotel or Couleur Café hotel.

The water town, Antsirabe, also known as the Vichy of Madagascar, with its thermal sources, its sacred lakes, and overhanging mountains. Antsirabe is also very involved in the agricultural field as well as with regards handicraft activities. Nature lovers may, on their way, stop at the insect sanctuary or just enjoy a pleasant trip in a rickshaw.

Day 3 Ranomafana

Breakfast. Drive to Ranomafana (240 km/10hrs) with a visit on the way to the wood-carving handicraft market in Ambositra and lunch at Artisan restaurant. Dinner and overnight at Thermal hotel.

The Park shelters more than ten species of lemurs, such a Simpona d’ Edwards (Propithecus edwardsi), gilded (bronzed) Hapalémur (H.griseus), grey (H. aureus) … more than a hundred sorts of birds, 75 % of the botanical species of the National park are not seen anywhere else besides.

This heritage, so rich in biodiversity, will interest a lot of nature lovers, photographers, researchers, and eco-tourists.

Day 4 Fianarantsoa

Breakfast. Morning visit to Ranomafana National Park. Lunch at the hotel. Afternoon drive to Fianarantsoa (68 km/1h30). Dinner and overnight at Zomatel/Tsaraguest.

Day 5 Ranohira

Breakfast. Drive to Ranohira with a visit on the way to Antemoro paper workshop and to Anja Park in Ambalavao. Lunch at Betsileo Country Lodge. Dinner and overnight at Relais de la Reine/Jardin du Roy.

It is advised to stop at Ambalavao to discover the Antemoro paper factory. This paper of Arabic origin is unique and is made of shrub barks called Avoha, chewed up with water and left in the sun to dry up. The Antemoro paper has become the raw material used in the making of greeting cards, gift wrappings, paintings, and all sorts of decorative items.

Day 6 Isalo National Park

Breakfast. Full day visit to Isalo National Park with picnic lunch.

Dinner and overnight at Relais de la Reine Hotel/Jardin du Roy

After you have travelled across the deserted ‘Plateaux de Horombe’, you will find in Isalo an oasis hidden in wonderfully coloured beds of sandstone. It is believed that Isalo is the living proof of continental drift, giving birth to cliffs and canyons of unique majesty with rare and endemic fauna and flora such as the Pachypodium, the Kalanchoe and the Aloe isaloensis. Isalo is also these waterfalls that, in certain places, form natural swimming pools so cool and so crystal-clear that it is hard to resist diving into them after early morning walks. Because of its unique beauty and tourist appeal, Isalo National Park is among the most visited parks of Madagascar.

Day 7 Ifaty

Breakfast. Drive to Ifaty (243 km/ 5hrs), then visit to Mr Petignat’s arboretum and lunch at the restaurant. Visit to Reniala reserve.

Dinner and overnight at Dunes d’Ifaty.

Reniala is a private reserve located near the sea, in the forest of Baobabs of the South-West of Madagascar, at the exit of the village of Mangily Ifaty to 27 km from Tuléar. The Reserve covers an area of 60 hectares. This zone presents an exceptional floristic and faunistic richness with more than 1000 plant species endemic to xerophytic adaptations (dry climate), remarkable, many remarkable endemic birds, including Uratelornis and Monias, reptiles: Turtles: Astrochelys, Pyxis, lizards, snakes, microcebes

Day 8 Toliara

Breakfast. Drive to Toliara (25km/45mn). Leave Toliara by flight. Arrive in Antananarivo, then transfer to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 9 Antananarivo

Breakfast. Transfer to the airport.
