MOMBASA is a coastal city in southeastern Kenya, on the shores of the Indian Ocean. It was the first capital of British East Africa until Nairobi became the capital in 1907. The city soon became a major trading center in East Africa, mainly trading spices, slaves, coconuts and ivory. Commercial ties reached the mainland of India and China. Over the centuries, the city changed hands – the Arabs, the Portuguese, the Sultanate of Oman, and in 1840 Mombasa was taken by the Sultan of Zanzibar, who later gave it to the British. It became a protectorate of Great Britain, which made Mombasa a sea gate and railway station.
Tourists enjoy some types of safaris and since the beach is perfect for snorkeling, diving and much more – this is why Mombasa has been a popular tourist destination for the past 100 years. On the other hand, Mombasa is not only famous for its beaches. The destination is well known as an ancient city that existed from the first to the fifth century.
Mombasa is now Kenya’s main port and the capital of Mombasa County. The city is known as the “white and blue city” in Kenya, also for its calm pace amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, so the slogan “Hakuna matata” – a Swahili phrase meaning “no problem” or “don’t worry” – reflects the reality of a slow life.
